Alsace is well known for its distillation of "white alcohols" from the abundant fruits of the area. Poire Williams/Poire prisonniere is one of these special eaux-de-vie. It is often sold with a whole pear trapped in the bottle. How does it get there? The bottle is typically hung on a tree, the bud is inserted into the bottle and the fruit is allowed to grow inside the bottle et voilà Poire Prisonnière ( Prisoner Pear)
